The Glasford Gazette is a weekly publication established in 1899. They were abstracted by Lyde several years ago for her own use; hence are not the complete notices. Any genealogical information has been gleaned from the obits, along with any interesting highlights. Please refer to the original film or publication for the complete and accurate notices. You might be able to order the film from the State of Illinois Newspaper Archives through your local library. The date in parentheses following each entry is the date of newspaper issue. As you can see on the 1875 Fulton County Township maps on this website, the town of Glasford is on the Fulton/Peoria County border and is adjacent to Orion Township, Fulton County. Glasford, Timber Township, Peoria Co. is just east of Orion on the Toledo, Peoria & Warsaw Railroad. On the Southwest Peoria Co. map, Orion Township is located where it says "T.7.N." just west of Peoria's Timber Township and the town of Glasford. There was a strong connection to Fulton County by these Timber Township (Peoria County) people, and The Glasford Gazette (a weekly paper) published a lot of obituaries mentioning Fulton County, especially Canton, which was only ten miles west on the railway line. Transcriber notes: Be aware as you read some of the following abstracted notices, that suicide seemed to be rather a fad or "copycat" cause of death during the years 1899-1904. I also found it curious that so many people were killed on the RR tracks. Wouldn't you think trains were even noisier at the turn of the century? How could people not hear or see a train coming in the remoteness of a farming community with nothing to obstruct the view? -Lyde ABEL, Mrs. Thomas (M.): died 29 March 1908 at home Canton. (Issue 26 Jan 1900) BRANSON, Thomas Minor: [This is from a special feature story of Old Settlers by The Glasford Gazette. The biography of Thomas M. Branson is in two parts] The oldest person in the township was the son of Jacob and Polly Branson and was born in Ohio Dec. 18, 1813 and came to Peoria County in 1844. He moved with his parents to Indiana when about 5 years old. They settled in Delaware County where the parents both died. Two brothers - David and Levi and two sisters - Elizabeth and Mary came to Illinois in the Spring of 1841 and Thomas came in the Fall of the same year, in company with three other men. They had two horses and the four men took turn about riding and walking. The other three soon after returned to Indiana. They struck the Illinois river about Ottawa, where Mr. Branson took a boat and went to Havana where he expected to find his brothers and sisters. He walked about 12 miles up the river on the Mason County side to where they had taken a claim. About two months later they all came up to Kingston where an uncle, John ALLEN was running a ferry. Kingston then consisted of two parts called Palmyra and Kingston with a tract of 6 acres between, owned by Dr. SEELEY. The buildings consisted of a saw mill, and three houses. DuMELL and WHITLOW operated the saw mill. Mr. Branson stopped on the Tazewell side with his uncle. His brother and two sisters soon after went back to Indiana. One brother had died since coming to Illinois. About the next year Mr. Allen went back to Ohio and Mr. Branson operated the ferry four or five years. About this time he was converted and joined the M.E. Church and as there was quite a lot of Sunday travel across the river, he sold out rather than work on the Sabbath. He then bought five yoke of oxen and hauled coal to the river and sold to the boats. Jessie EGGMAN and family lived on what is now known as the ROBINSON place East of Kingston and the ferry was known as Eggman's ferry. After Mr. Eggman's death, his widow married a Mr. BUSH, who soon after again left her a widow. Later she married Thomas ROBISON and for the third time is a widow. Mrs. Robison is still living and is the only person living, at least so far as known, who lived at or near Kingston when Mr. Branson came there. About this time a Mr. STRAUTHER leased the mill and began also to mine some coal Mr. Branson worked for him some time as kind of bank boss and foreman, having charge of the selling of the coal to the boats and would also go up the river with a barge as far as Ottawa. The boats at first used wood altogether, but about this time began to mix in some coal and Mr. Branson hauled the first coal down with oxen. Money was scarce. Wages were low, 75 cents being considered good wages. In Indiana Mr. Branson worked for 25 cents a day, common labor and 37 cents per day in harvest. Consequently he thought 75 for helping to push boats to Pekin was quite good wages. Dry goods and groceries were much higher than now. As people wove their own jeans, linsey and burned candles and used molasses for sweetening, very little "store goods" were bought. Farmers from out toward Harkers Corners and Smithville would cross the ferry at Kingston to go to a mill out on the Mackinaw and pay their ferriage in flour or meal on their way back as they did not have the money. In 1854 Mr. Branson was married to Miss Jane ALDERS, to whom three children were born - Isabelle, who married Luther COUCH, Mary, who married Thomas COUCH and George who died when three months old After his marriage, Mr. Branson lived in Kingston two years, then bought 10 acres on the hill north of town and built a log house. He cleared it off and farmed here over twenty years. In 1861 his wife died, leaving him with two girls, ages six and three years. When old enough they kept house for their father until both were married. Mr. Branson then sold his farm to the Kingston Coal Company and went to live with his son-in-law, Luther Couch, remaining there twelve years, since which time he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Couch, coming with them to Glasford about seven years ago. Mr. Branson bought a house and lot of Col. FAHNESTOCK, which is now occupied by Mr. SLONE. Among the early teachers at Kingston's first log school house, Mr. Branson remembers Miss Lizzie ASHBY, and among the ministers, Rev's MOSS and RITCHIE. Pekin was the post office where the Kingston people got their mail. Having always been an industrious man, he finds it tiresome to do nothing, so of late years he has cut and sewed more carpet rags than all the ladies sewing societies combined. He also takes pleasure in helping the neighbors to wash - turning the machine just for exercise.
